E LETTER – JANUARY 2009 It seems hard to believe that a New Year is upon us already. May God grant each of us peace in 2009. I want to talk to you a bit about our 2009 Vestry meeting and what lies ahead for St. Stephen’s this year. With our new Bishop, the Right Reverend Robert Bennett visiting us on January 25th, our Vestry meeting will need to be held on Sunday February 1st. I’m going to suggest to you that two issues will be front and centre at this meeting and both were clearly identified at our Vision Day in the spring of 2008. They are Youth Ministry and Stewardship. For those who were with us at the Christmas Concert in mid December, you know that a couple of young people from St. Stephen’s gave a stirring presentation of their hopes and dreams for youth ministry. In all truth, they have laid down the gauntlet to the congregation, asking us to go forward in faith with these programs. Vestry will be about our response. Currently we offer a Church School program on Sunday’s and an 8 plus youth group at least one Friday night a month. The main issue is that, due to having few leaders, we are forced to lump broad age groups together. Anyone who has (or had) children crossing several age brackets, knows how hard it is to get a program to mesh together when you have 8 years and 14 year olds trying to work in the same group. We need to look at how we do ministry with children and youth and put together a long term, sustainable program for St. Stephen’s. Funding to run the church and its programs is always an issue. We are still trying to find ways to recover the revenue lost when the daycare moved into its own facility and while the music studio will help us recoup about half of the 40 thousand dollars per year shortfall without the daycare, given the current economic times we must plan and execute budgets very carefully. But there’s much more to it than dollars and cents. We have rebuilt the wonderful spirit that St. Stephen’s is known for. We can see new friendships blossoming and our community coming together. Part of the challenge then is to get more people involved in the ministry of St. Stephen’s. My experience is that everyone here is willing to help; the challenge in this busy world is to communicate the needs to the right people and find the right time to get things done. We begin 2009 with one key ingredient in place. WE KNOW HOW TO HAVE FUN! Let’s build on that spirit and together do the ministry of God in this community. With His Love Keith
